The Water Fan — Winslow Homer

from $45.00

The Water Fan depicts a young man intently searching for coral using a glass-bottomed bucket. Referred to as a “water glass” or “sponge glass,” this device was used to stabilize the surface of moving water in order to improve visibility. Homer may have been attracted to the subject because it draws attention to the constantly moving surface of the water as well as its transparency, aspects of the sea that especially intrigued him in the Bahamas. Like The Sponge Diver (1898/99; MFA Boston), this work originally had more visible red washes in the water, hinting at the pink coral beneath the surface. While these areas have faded, the fluid strokes of darker blue over layers of transparent turquoise are effective in suggesting the play of light, both direct and reflected, over water.

Homer depicted light shimmering on the ocean using watercolor paper with a heavy twill texture in The Water Fan (original painting). The diagonal pattern of the sheet, which runs from top right to lower left, was imparted during manufacture by the papermaker’s woven wire screen that supported the paper pulp during sheet formation.

Sometimes also referred to as a "gicleé", the prints are created from a digital scans or high resolution photographs of existing original works and are printed using a highly sophisticated and accurate printing technique with inks promising a 200+ year archival life.

LIMITED EDITION PRINTS Artworks in a limited edition have a set number of prints available for each size offered. For example, if the edition is 100 in a 26” x 20” size, there can be no other prints made at that size of that image. Once all 100 prints in this edition size have sold out, there will be no other prints of this image, at this size, produced. Limited edition prints of this artwork may be available in other sizes.

WHAT LIMITED EDITION NUMBERING MEANS A limited edition print that recites the number 5/50 means that the buyer is purchasing the fifth published print in a maximum print edition of 50 total prints (plus any proofs) of a specified size and dimension based upon a high resolution digital image of the artist’s original work of art. The Certificate of Authenticity tells the buyer if more than one edition has been published from the original image. For example, a print numbered 5/50 in a limited edition of 50 could be sold measuring 12" x 24" and another print numbered 5/25 in a limited edition of 25 could be sold measuring 24" x 36".

CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY All limited edition prints are accompanied by a signed and numbered Certificate of Authenticity which certifies that the "information and statements contained therein are true and correct.” Spitting Image Gallery has assigned a number to this print which will be printed on the Certificate of Authenticity and also on the back of the print in ultraviolet ink for an extra level of protection. All Spitting Image Gallery prints will contain an embossed “chop” in the border of the image. These efforts are made to ensure that the authenticity of your artwork will remain unchallenged.

LEGAL DISCLOSURE The term "limited edition" has various meanings depending upon the artist, publisher, distributor and seller (or reseller).
