Winged Figure — Abbott Handerson Thayer
Winged Figure — Abbott Handerson Thayer
Winged Figure, 1889
This female angel is one of many that Abbott Handerson Thayer painted during his career. Originally a painter of animals, Thayer created portraits and then allegorical figures like this example after training in Paris. The artist wrote of his seraphic subjects, “I have put on wings probably more to symbolize an exalted atmosphere … where one need not explain the action of his figures.” Other late 19th-century artists such as Augustus Saint-Gaudens also represented angelic female figures to personify what they perceived as the virtues of women. In Winged Figure, Thayer mixed this idealism with a level of naturalism, particularizing the woman’s features and giving her form a sense of mass and gravity.

ARCHIVAL PIGMENT PRINTS The archival pigment printing process is a technique that provides an unsurpassed level of accuracy in fine art reproduction. Sometimes also referred to as a "gicleé", the prints are created from a digital scans or high resolution photographs of existing original works and are printed using a highly sophisticated and accurate printing technique with inks promising a 200+ year archival life.
LIMITED EDITION PRINTS Artworks in a limited edition have a set number of prints available for each size offered. For example, if the edition is 100 in a 26” x 20” size, there can be no other prints made at that size of that image. Once all 100 prints in this edition size have sold out, there will be no other prints of this image, at this size, produced. Limited edition prints of this artwork may be available in other sizes.
WHAT LIMITED EDITION NUMBERING MEANS A limited edition print that recites the number 5/50 means that the buyer is purchasing the fifth published print in a maximum print edition of 50 total prints (plus any proofs) of a specified size and dimension based upon a high resolution digital image of the artist’s original work of art. The Certificate of Authenticity tells the buyer if more than one edition has been published from the original image. For example, a print numbered 5/50 in a limited edition of 50 could be sold measuring 12" x 24" and another print numbered 5/25 in a limited edition of 25 could be sold measuring 24" x 36".
CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY All limited edition prints are accompanied by a signed and numbered Certificate of Authenticity which certifies that the "information and statements contained therein are true and correct.” Spitting Image Gallery has assigned a number to this print which will be printed on the Certificate of Authenticity and also on the back of the print in ultraviolet ink for an extra level of protection. All Spitting Image Gallery prints will contain an embossed “chop” in the border of the image. These efforts are made to ensure that the authenticity of your artwork will remain unchallenged.
LEGAL DISCLOSURE The term "limited edition" has various meanings depending upon the artist, publisher, distributor and seller (or reseller).
